JORASANKO THAKUR BARI

The ancestral home of the Tagore’s is known as Jorasanko Thakur Bari. Rabindranath Tagore, a poet, artist, and the first Asian to receive a Nobel Prize, was the most notable of them all.

In the magnificent house, one of Kolkata's most precious heritage buildings, Rabindranath Tagore was born. He spent both his younger and older years there as well. At the Thakur Bari, Gaganendranath and Abanindranath Tagore, who founded the Bengal School of Art, also resided.
The Jorasanko Thakur Bari has been transformed into Rabindra Bharati University, a hub for quality education and Indian Classical Fine Arts. The building also accommodates the spectacular Rabindra Bharati Museum, which debuted in 1961 and features diaries kept by the Tagores. The area, colloquially referred to as Thakur Bari, has continued to serve as the centre of Bengal's creative and cultural reformations, including the Bengal Renaissance and Brahmo Samaj. The location is now a destination for artists and art enthusiasts from around the world.
Every year, on Panchise Baisakh, the university celebrates Tagore's birthday with a cultural event (25th day of Baishakh).

Jorasanko Thakurbari Architecture and History
The beginning of Jorasanko Thakur Bari's history may be traced to 1784, when Nilmoni Tagore left his family's home due to unresolved issues and was given a block of land on the east side of Chitpur Road as a gift. At Jorasanko, Nilmoni Tagore constructed a modest home.

Prince Dwarkanath Tagore, the distinguished grandfather of Rabindranath Tagore, later extended the Thakur Bari in the 18th century. The mansion is situated in Jorasanko, close to Girish Park, on Chittaranjan Avenue, in the northern part of Kolkata. The illustrious Seth family gave the land to Prince Dwarkanath Tagore. Rabindranath spent a significant portion of his life at this house after being born here in 1861. The Nobel laureate passed away in this location in 1941.

Due to the presence of twin Shiva temples close to the residence, the place was given the name Jorasanko.Over 35000 square metres, there stands the Jorasanko Thakur Bari. The opulent brick red palace was originally conceived as a tiny residence, to which several wings and lanes were gradually built.

Members could plainly see the programmes on the natya manch, which located in the middle of the house, thanks to the rounded verandah. The Tagore’s never adhered to the purdah rule in their home, not even during the height of its popularity. The family's ladies had an equal right to have frank discussions about literature, art, business, and other topics. Later, this very family's viewpoint helped bring about more significant cultural changes in the community.

Jorasanko Thakurbari Events
The Jorasanko Thakur Bari is close to the Rabindra Bharti University, which hosts a wide variety of events and programmes. The Panchise Baisakh, a cultural celebration held on the poet's birthday, is the most significant of all occasions. Other events are also commemorated with the same enthusiasm, such as the anniversary of Tagore's passing, known as Baishe Shravan at the Jorasanko Thakur Bari. The university also hosts the Aban Mela Festival of Arts.
